ICE supports pilot phase of the CoST Initiative to fight corruption in the construction sector
(30/05/2008)
Backed by £4.4 million from the UK Government and supported by the Department for International Development (DFID) and the World Bank, the CoST initiative represents a significant milestone for global collaborative efforts to fight corruption in the construction sector.
The CoST Initiative is a global effort to ensure that government funded construction projects are delivered on time, at high quality and at a reasonable price. The pilot phase of implementation will last for two years, working alongside the governments of Tanzania, Zambia, Vietnam and the Philippines.
The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), in its role as part of the secretariat for the Construction Sector Transparency (CoST) Initiative, gave a key presentation at its launch in Tanzania at the end of May.
ICE Manager and Technical Adviser to the CoST initiative John Hawkins gave a presentation at the launch, which focused on the complex issues surrounding project selection and implementation.
Mr Hawkins said: “The launch of the pilot phase of the CoST Initiative is an important part of tackling worldwide corruption in the construction industry. I am pleased to have had the opportunity to present at this event and now aim to use ICE’s place on the CoST Secretariat to help drive forward this initiative.”
Mr Hawkins presented alongside Jill Wells from Engineers Against Poverty, which is also on the Secretariat along with PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Tiri.
