Gleeds completes Environment Centre Wales at Bangor University
(22/10/2008)
Gleeds has completed their work as Cost Managers for the new £6.1 million Environment Centre Wales at Bangor University.
The new purpose-built 2,820m² structure covering three floors, will house a state-of-the-art laboratory on the University campus and was a partnership between the University and the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH). The building provides a modern, innovative environment and will bring together 60 environmental scientists from the University and CEH and will provide a focal point for environmental research and training in Wales.
The Centre has received the Building Research Establishment’s (BRE) highest environmental assessment rating for its design and construction elements. The BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) is one of the world’s leading systems for assessing the range of environmental impacts associated with buildings. The Environment Centre for Wales received an ‘Excellent’ rating for its design, which uses ‘A’ grade materials, ground source heat pumps and natural light.
The new facility has been built directly behind the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology’s old home on Deiniol Road, Bangor. The Orton Building, which was known locally as one of the ‘ugly sisters’ of Bangor was demolished and disposed of in a sustainable manner. The new focal point for environmental research and training in Wales was officially opened by the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown in February 2008.
Ian Miller, Managing Partner at Gleeds Bristol said, “We are delighted to be involved in such a ground breaking and important project for Bangor University. To be part of a landmark scheme, now the most sustainable building in Wales is very exciting and an honour. The new centre is set to transform the University and make it one of the most exciting and inspirational teaching and research facilities for environmental sciences in the University sector.”
