Pyeroy provides access scaffold for the installation of insulation at Marchwood Power station
(21/04/2009)
The contract to provide access scaffold for the installation of insulation on the outlet stacks at the new £380 million Marchwood Power natural gas combined cycle power station in Southampton has been won by Gateshead-based industrial services specialists Pyeroy.
The £1.7 million contract will see a team of 50 contractors from the company erecting engineered scaffolding which will enable them to undertake the insulation work on the two 70 metre high structures by spring 2009.
Pyeroy has also secured the mechanical services work, which will involve fitting and insulating the piping system for the stacks' boilers and associated structural steel installation and welding services work.
The contract has been awarded by SiemensPower Generation, the principal contractors for the Marchwood Power Station being built on the banks of Southampton Water in Hampshire.
The power plant is scheduled to open this year and will generate enough electricity to supply the needs of nearly one million homes - equivalent to the combined energy needs of Southampton, the New Forest and Winchester.
The 842 megawatt facility will use the latest technology to ensure maximum energy efficiency and minimal impact on the environment. It will be one of the most efficient generators of electricity in the UK when it comes online.
This is the latest power station contract for Pyeroy's Industrial Services Division following completion of environmental improvement works worth over £4 million at two of Ireland's largest power stations - ESB Moneypoint and AES Kilroot power stations.
Pyeroy's project manager Malcolm Hood said: "We won the contract because of our expertise and track record in managing complex projects involving engineered scaffolding and specialist insulation work. Although the market continues to be extremely challenging with constant pressure on delivery of cost improvements and efficiency, this latest success puts us in a great position for more work of a similar nature in future."
