Beaumont Leys Specialist Science School is one of four schools in the first phase of the £235m Leicester Building Schools for the Future (BSF) scheme. Beaumont Leys has been delivered six weeks ahead of programme.

The School was delivered for Leicester City Council by the Leicester Miller Education Company (LMEC) as part of the Leicester BSF project. Leicester Miller Education Company is the Local Education Partnership (LEP), which was formed to deliver the first wave of BSF projects and consists of a partnership between Miller, G4S, Leicester City Council and BSFI.

Initially intended as a refurbishment project, LMEC was able to supply a design solution at no additional cost which enabled a completely new school building.

Over 1,000 pupils and 150 members of staff will benefit from the £14m new learning environment which has received a BREEAM 'excellent' rating. However, the local community will also be able to make use of the new facilities, including, the sport’s hall; dance and drama studios; and dining facilities which are suitable for conferences and weddings.

Liz Logie, Headteacher, Beaumont Leys Specialist Science School, said: “We are delighted with the new school and thrilled that we are able to take occupation six weeks ahead of the original schedule. We have been involved with the construction team since the very start of the project, and they have embraced our vision for Beaumont Leys.

“We quickly discovered that Miller Construction cared as much about the school as we did and we were all committed to the delivery of the best school possible. All too often the construction industry is on the receiving end of bad press, our experience at Beaumont Leys has reversed our perception and has been nothing short of fantastic.”

Stephen Trebble, General Manager, Leicester Miller Education Company, said: “The co-operation, commitment and focus of the school throughout the process has been fundamental to the projects’ success and the ability to be able to reach such a significantly early hand over. Leicester City Council is setting a blue print for the education facilities for future generations.”

Chief Executive of Partnership for Schools, Tim Byles, commented: “Building Schools for the Future is all about giving young people a better and a brighter future. The investment in Beaumont Leys – the second BSF school to open in the city – will not only give the students and teachers a safe, welcoming and inspiring place to learn, but will also be a real asset to the local community.”

Local Ward Councillor and Education Lead, Vi Dempster, expressed her “absolute delight” at this development.

Being delivered by LMEC and built by Miller Construction, the extensive extension at Fullhurst Community College is complete while the refurbishment is due for completion shortly, and works are ongoing at Soar Valley and Judgemeadow.
