ISG to refurbish and upgrade office and storage facility for Mersey Tunnels
(22/05/2009)
ISG has been awarded a further £700K project with Merseytravel (Merseyside Integrated Transport Authority and Passenger Transport Executive) to refurbish and upgrade an existing office, works and storage facility for the Mersey Tunnels. The project follows ISG’s £10.5 million scheme with the client to build the new Pier Head ferry terminal, which also includes an extension to the renowned Beatles Story visitor attraction.
The Mersey Tunnel facility will be dedicated to the asset management of the two tunnels, running under the River Mersey, that link Liverpool with the Wirral Peninsula. In addition to office accommodation, the building provides storage for materials and equipment, welfare facilities for staff, and a range of workshop areas. To enhance both capacity and flexibility within the building, ISG is carrying out a multi-phased construction programme, with existing staff now relocated to temporary accommodation as the main phase of the project commences.
The two-storey structure will be reconfigured, with the main storage area moved from the first floor to the ground floor level. The first floor accommodation will then be stripped out and converted into a large, majority open plan office with ISG forming new windows in the structure and installing raised access floors and new ceilings, as well as creating a number of partitioned meeting rooms and offices. By enlarging the accommodation, Merseytravel will be able to relocate staff from existing offices within the Georges Dock Building in Liverpool.
Craig Tatton, managing director of ISG’s regional business, commented: "The success of previous projects for Merseytravel has resulted in an increasing volume of high quality opportunities for ISG within Merseyside. Generating repeat business is a vital indicator of our overall project performance and indicates a desire by our clients to work closely with a contractor that successfully delivers a high quality product to the required expectations.”
