Constructed by Multibuild for Doncaster developer Basilton Properties, the Premier Inn is in Doncaster’s historic centre, near the Market Place, Corn Exchange and St George’s church. The 3-star hotel is part of the prestigious £9.4 million High Fisher Gate development in Doncaster town centre. It includes a 140-room hotel, restaurant and 3,000m2 of commercial and retail space.

James & Taylor have created their first UK shingle terracotta façade for Doncaster’s new business class Premier Inn, designed by architects Cartwright Pickard. It’s the first hotel development in the town centre for 40 years.

Cartwright Pickard commissioned James & Taylor to provide 614m2 Moeding Alphaton shingle tiles in terracotta beige – the first ever order in this profile, which is unique to Moeding Alphaton.

Peter Cartwright, Director at Cartwright Pickard said: “We chose the shingle façade to give a horizontal emphasis to the cladding. It gives a thicker, softer line to the elevation, with the stretcher bond fixing of the tiles adding further interest to the terracotta cladding.”

John Champion, Managing Director of James & Taylor said: “Alphaton terracotta is a natural material that ages well and is sympathetic to the natural stone of neighbouring buildings. The cladding will help integrate this contemporary building with its historic surroundings.”

James & Taylor worked with the project team to produce a tile of the required profile, size and colour and ensured that the façade was available within the timescales of a pressing construction programme.

Notes for editors
The Shed (formerly Doncaster Design Centre), currently occupies one of the retail spaces below the hotel and chose the building as the venue for its launch on 17 September 2009. The Shed is a new architecture centre that works with schools, communities and the public and aims to enable them to become more confident in participating in the shaping of their own environments.
