Steve Burgess, Director of the Leadbitter Group, has handed the keys to Newport High School and Active Living Centre to the leader of Newport City Council Councillor Matthew Evans.

The landmark new development, which will replace Bettws High School and leisure centre, has opened its doors to pupils to offer advanced teaching facilities, including 34 general classrooms, eight science labs, eight ICT suites, a fully-equipped design technology wing, six SEN areas and a vocational training learning and resource centre.

The new Active Living Centre with its state-of-the-art leisure facilities, including a new 25m swimming pool, fitness suite, full size artificial turf pitch, multi-use games areas and sports pitches is open for community use outside of school hours for residents from all over the city.

Councillor Evans said: “We are committed to providing high quality, modern education facilities for Newport, and I believe this school will offer many generations of children the best education environment to ensure they reach their full potential. I’d like to thank everyone who has worked so hard on this project to ensure it has been a success.”

Steve Burgess, Director of Leadbitter Group said: "We are very proud to have worked as part of a collaborative team on Newport High School. We are confident that the teachers and students will fully appreciate the quality of the design and the learning environment when they start teaching here."

Newport High School is the first project in the city’s major secondary schools redevelopment programme.
