Gleeds has begun work as Cost Manager on an extensive refurbishment programme of Lecture Theatres and Teaching Rooms for the University of Newcastle. The project, which covers work across a number of sites, is valued at over Ł5 million. Phase three has just been initiated. The University has recently invested in a Ł200 million overhaul to the 50 acre campus.

Gleeds was appointed to a framework agreement by the University, which serves the needs of more than 18,000 students, for the provision of services over a four year period. Stage one involved refurbishments to the main campus buildings including lecture theatres and seminar rooms, with stage two comprising renovations to the Faculty of Medical Sciences, providing much needed space for new research laboratories.

The third phase of works has just begun and will see the University’s R.B Green Lecture Theatre completely refurbished before phase four begins which will bring about renovation of the Ridley Building Laboratories comprising three research labs along with their associated cold rooms and offices. The final phase, due to be completed in September 2010, will involve the restoration of two IT clusters in the Herschel and Stephenson Buildings.

The substantial works will see improvements made to a total of eleven buildings, covering over 4000m2 and Gleeds is working closely with the University to ensure that work is carried out to a high standard, with minimal disruption to students’ examinations and graduation ceremonies.

“It is through the demonstration of their understanding of our priorities and working procedures that Gleeds have been retained as a leading part of the project team for this programme of works.” said Doug Swailes, Capital Projects Manager for University of Newcastle.

Stuart Senior, Managing Partner of Gleeds Nottingham said, “I am delighted that Gleeds has been appointed to this fantastic scheme for Newcastle University, adding to our recent success in the Education sector. These superb facilities will enhance Newcastle’s position as one of the top teaching and research institutions in the UK and make it one of the most desirable destinations for both students and staff”.
