Leadbitter completes Gordon House development in the heart of historic Chichester
(19/07/2010)
Gordon House forms part of The Square, Eastgate, which has been constructed by the Leadbitter Group on behalf of developer Seaward Properties. It is one of the most important building projects in Chichester and is a key focal point of the Eastgate area of the city, which includes a former furniture depository and derelict swimming baths.
A ceremony was recently held to mark the completion of Gordon House in Eastgate Square, Chichester. A representative of HydeMartlet housing association cut the ribbon to mark the completion of Gordon House, which comprises 22 one and two bedroom apartments for shared ownership and rent and four apartments for sale on the open market.
The first two phases of the development comprise ten townhouses with four and five bedrooms, plus 41 apartments with one, two or three bedrooms, together with over 11,000 square feet of new retail/restaurant space. A mix of contemporary and classical design, the properties benefit from a secluded position adjacent to the historic Roman city wall, yet in the heart of the thriving city.
David Cook, Regional Director of Leadbitter's Southern Housing & Construction Division, said, “Leadbitter is very proud of the work we have undertaken in partnership with Seaward Properties to construct this unique development within the heart of historic Chichester. We have a great deal of experience in delivering this kind of mixed-use development, which includes retail space, affordable housing and homes for private sale. We’ve established a valued relationship with Seaward Properties and Hyde housing association and we look forward to this continuing.”
David West, Seaward’s Managing Director, said, “Seaward has welcomed the opportunity to work in partnership with Chichester District Council, Hyde Martlet and Leadbitter to develop this previously neglected corner of Chichester. We look forward to The Square becoming a vibrant and popular location in the City.”
Melva Bateman, Portfolio Holder for Housing at Chichester District Council, said, “We are delighted to see these new homes for local people right in the centre of Chichester. There are over seven thousand people on the Council’s housing register, and well over two thousand with a local connection to Chichester. New developments are essential to keep the district thriving. Within Gordon House there are flats to rent at both social and intermediate rents, and shared ownership and full market flats to buy. This is an excellent example of a mixed and sustainable development.”
