Delta Steeplejacks extends the life of the chimney at the Coventry and Solihull Waste Disposal Company

Delta Steeplejacks Ltd has undertaken a pioneering refurbishment in order to extend the life of the main chimney at the Coventry and Solihull Waste Disposal Company.

As a result of the age and general wear and tear of the chimney, both the serviceability and lining casing had been detrimentally affected. At this stage a rebuild of the chimney was not an option, so the client put out a tender for a specialist contractor who could extend its life by at least ten years. The valiant winner was longstanding ATLAS member, Delta Steeplejacks Ltd.

Through the stringent tendering process, there were several objectives and criteria that needed to be met including, technical experience, competitiveness, as well as an excellent health and safety record to name but a few. None of this was a problem for Delta, who is renowned in the industry for their high standards and innovative approaches to any difficult or unusual job.

After receiving a specification from the client’s engineer, Delta used this to construct a detailed proposal which included:
- The fabrication and installation of a temporary flue to bypass the main chimney to enable the works to be carried out whilst the plant remained operational
- The removal of the existing gunite lining
- The fabrication and installation of a borosilicate block lined new flue liner using innovative methods to reduce expensive crane costs

The job was completed on schedule with no lost time, incidents or accidents and approximately 7,000 man hours worked.
