ISG commences work on modernisation of the Parkinson Building
(03/09/2010)
ISG has commenced work on a £2.3 million modernisation project with the University of Leeds at the Parkinson Building, the iconic city landmark whose tower features on the institution’s logo. The contractor will strip out and install modern mechanical and electrical services throughout the four-storey building as part of the upgrade works, which will significantly enhance the environmental performance and efficiency of the facility.
The project has been carefully phased to enable the University to continue to occupy the building throughout the duration of the programme. The complex project will be handed over in district phases, enabling staff and students to occupy newly refurbished areas, with ISG working systematically through the entire building. The project is scheduled for completion in September 2011.
In addition to removing the existing mechanical and electrical infrastructure and replacing this with modern efficient systems, the contractor will install roof mounted photo voltaic cells to generate emission free electricity. Secondary glazing and energy efficient lighting will also be installed to further enhance the environmental performance of the building
John Gittins, ISG's regional director, commented: "Despite the challenging economic climate, leading educational institutions continue to recognise the importance of both maintaining and upgrading their property portfolios. The overall value of projects may well decline over the immediate future, however those contractors able to demonstrate excellent credentials and an innovative approach will undoubtedly benefit from strong relationships with key education providers.”
